META: What every dashboard warning light means, which ones require immediate action, and which can wait — explained clearly for Malawian drivers. | KEYWORDS: car warning lights Malawi, dashboard warning lights, check engine light Malawi, oil pressure light, car warning symbols Malawi
Dashboard warning lights are your vehicle's communication system — designed to tell you that something requires attention before it becomes an expensive or dangerous problem. Most Malawian drivers can identify the fuel gauge and perhaps the temperature gauge. The rest of the dashboard illuminates occasionally and receives no response because the meaning is unclear. This guide changes that.
Oil Pressure Warning (Oil Can Symbol)
This is the most urgent warning light on your dashboard. Low oil pressure means critical engine components are operating without adequate lubrication. If this light illuminates while driving, stop safely as soon as possible — within seconds if the road allows — and do not restart the engine until the cause is investigated. Running an engine with low oil pressure causes catastrophic and irreversible internal damage within minutes. Do not assume it is just a sensor fault.
Engine Temperature Warning (Thermometer in Water Symbol)
Engine overheating. Stop driving and allow the engine to cool. Do not open the radiator cap on a hot engine — the coolant is pressurised and can cause serious burns. Common causes in Malawi: low coolant level, failed water pump, blocked radiator, failed thermostat, or head gasket failure. Running an overheated engine warps the cylinder head and can destroy the engine.
Battery Warning (Battery Symbol)
The charging system is not functioning. The vehicle is running on battery alone and will stop when the battery discharges — typically within 20 to 60 minutes depending on battery state and electrical load. Reduce electrical loads and reach a workshop as soon as possible. Do not switch off the engine until you are at a safe location, as restarting may not be possible.
Brake System Warning
Can indicate low brake fluid (which may signal a leak), brake pad wear sensors triggered, or ABS/electronic brake system fault. Any brake system warning should be investigated promptly. Do not assume it is a minor issue when brakes are involved.
Check Engine Light (Engine Symbol)
The most commonly ignored warning light in Malawi. It indicates that the engine management system has detected a fault and stored a diagnostic code. The fault may be minor (a faulty sensor) or significant (misfiring, emissions system problem, fuel system issue). It requires a diagnostic code reader to identify the specific fault — a service any professional workshop should be able to provide. Ignoring it for extended periods risks damaging catalytic converters and other components.
Traction Control / Stability Control Warning
Indicates a fault in the electronic stability or traction control system. The vehicle is still driveable but with reduced electronic safety intervention. Investigate at next service opportunity.
Service Due Reminder
The vehicle has reached its programmed service interval. Book a service. This light does not extinguish on its own — it needs to be reset after service by a workshop with the correct diagnostic equipment.
Agason Motors can diagnose warning lights, supply the parts to address the underlying faults, and reset service indicators. Our workshop is equipped to handle both mechanical and electronic diagnostic requirements.
